As New Jersey American Water began work Tuesday evening to unearth the source of the leak, customers in 18 municipalities in four counties were asked to conserve water and curtail outdoor water use for 24 hours.
“Our preliminary investigation efforts were constrained by difficult site conditions and safety concerns related to the depth of this high pressure main and its proximity to the Royce Brook. As such, our repair plan had several contingencies based on what we found once the main was depressurized and the excavation dewatered,” said Stephen P. Schmitt, vice president of operations at New Jersey American Water.
