OCEANPORT, NJ — Because West Nile virus has been detected in New Jersey, Monmouth County will spray for mosquitoes in Oceanport and Long Branch this Thursday, Sept. 5, from 4:30-6:30 a.m.

The spraying targets adult mosquitoes. The county will be applying Zenivex, using truck-mounted Ultra-Low-Volume (ULV) equipment mounted in the bed of a pick-up truck. The county will also spray in Long Branch, also Thursday morning, 4:30 - 6:30 a.m. in the area of Chelsea Avenue extending south to Brighton Avenue and east from Westwood Avenue to Ocean Boulevard.

“Due to evidence of West Nile virus in the area, the Mosquito Control Division will treat the peninsula above Monmouth Avenue as well as Gooseneck Point Road,” said Commissioner Director Tom Arnone. “The County offers courtesy inspections where an inspector can visit your property to look for standing water sources that support mosquito larvae. “Mid-August through mid-September is traditionally the peak season for mosquito-borne disease (West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis), the Division advises all residents to protect themselves with repellent and/or to wear long-sleeved shirts and pants when outdoors,” said Commissioner Susan Kiley, liaison to the Mosquito Control Division. “Residents can help ‘Fight the Bite’ by using the Mosquito Control checklist to find and eliminate all the places where mosquitos breed around homes and other structures.”

The EPA considers pyrethroid-containing products to be slightly toxic with minimal potential risk to people when used properly as part of an integrated mosquito control program.
