Oceanport Proposing to Ban Sale of Cats, Dogs

By Christopher Sheldon

Retailers would be banned from selling dogs and cats in Oceanport Point Borough under the terms of an ordinance that was introduced by the borough council on July 18.

While the borough does not currently have any pet stores, officials are looking to keep it that way.

The purpose of the ordinance is to not allow the sale of cats or dogs from puppy mills or kitten factories. These establishments are often criticized for their uncleanliness and inhumane conditions.

The ordinance states that the borough may issue a license for a pet shop only sells pet supplies, but not one that sells dogs or cats.

The ordinance will likely be adopted at the next Oceanport Council meeting in August.
