Tell Us: Should Rice's Behavior at Rutgers Keep Him From Coaching Kids?

The former coach, fired for abusive behavior towards his basketball players, was spotted coaching a seventh grade girls basketball league this weekend.

Mike Rice was fired for hurling basketballs at his players and unleashing insulting homophobic rants, but the former Rutgers mens basketball coach was spotted over the weekend coaching a seventh grade girls AAU team in Holmdel.

Deadspin.com reported that Rice, who lives in Little Silver, was seen coaching a 12-year-old girls  basketball team at Holmdel High School on Saturday night. The article cites tweets by contributor Brian Geltzeiler of hoopscritic.com reporting that Rice was acting "crazy as ever yelling @ both refs and kids."

Geltzeiler posted in a follow up tweet, "Just to clarify. I'm not joking. Mike Rice is actually coaching a 7th grade girls AAU team today and he's still acting like a mad man."

The news elicited a number of comments on Facebook, most opposed to Rice coaching kids.

"His 'style' of coaching is completely unacceptable," posted Ravaschiere Dominique on the Little Silver-Oceanport Patch Facebook page. "Girls at this age should not be subject to his damaging behavior."

Jenni Hoffman posted on the Middletown Patch Facebook page, "Witnessed appalling behavior this weekend at Holmdel with other coaches as well ... The level of hostility encouraged on some teams is just awful."

Red Bank Mayor Pasquale Menna sided with the majority of Patch users responding, commenting on the Red Bank-Shrewsbury Patch Facebook page, "Absolutely should be removed for his bullying and homophobic attitude."

In defense of Rice coaching the youth team, a commenter with the user name "Who-Cares?" posted on Patch, "Every single parent of those girls are aware of Mike's coaching "style" and CHOOSE to support him and expose their kids to his methods ... Do you expect anything less from our sport-obsessed, über-competitive area ?"

On the Howell Patch Facebook page, Rich Behnken disapproved of Rice's coaching methods with the recreational players: "Personally witnessed Rice coach against my daughter and before I knew who he was I thought he was a jerk. He yelled at 12 year old girls like he was yelling at men. Just a total disgrace."
