Can Livingston Police Find Your Home in an Emergency?

Could first responders find your house in an emergency? Here how's to ensure that Livingston Police or Fire can come to the rescue quickly.

In a life-threatening emergency, the difference between a life saved and a life lost could be seconds. That’s why Livingston Police are reminding local residents to make sure that house numbers can be easily seen from the street – at least 5 feet high and clearly visible.

“Having just come from a call where I could not find a house number, may I suggest putting your number on your house in a visible area that is lit up or making sure if it’s out by the street, it has a light on it,” a Livingston Police Officer posted on the Livingston Police Facebook page. “In an emergency seconds count.”

Here are some important tips from the Township of Livingston on displaying your house number.

  • The house numbers must be at least 5 feet high, but the larger the numbers and the higher displayed, the better.
  • House numbers must be easily seen from the street. The Township notes that if you can’t see your numbers fro the street, neither can first responders in an emergency.
  • Put up large, easy to read house numbers in a clear location.
  • Local ordinances mandate that homeowners display 3-inch house numbers on pre-existing construction, while new construction must feature 5-inch house numbers. Regardless, police note that the larger the numbers are, the better.

“Your pizza gets colder every minute the delivery guy drives past because he can’t find your house number,” Livingston Police said. “Before the nasty weather begins, take a moment to make sure that emergency personnel can find you as quickly as possible when you need them.”
