Millburn Superintendent Responds To 'Inflammatory And Offensive' Flyers

Millburn's superintendent responded to what she said was an "offensive" flyer in a school bathroom about the Israel/Palestine conflict.

MILLBURN, NJ — Amid ongoing tensions about the Israel/Palestine conflict, Millburn's Superintendent of Schools, Christine Burton, issued a message as part of her newsletter on Wednesday.

Burton referred to flyers related to the conflict, recently left in a high school bathroom, as "inflammatory and offensive," but did not give more specifics about what they said.

"Some of you may have heard that there was an incident this week at Millburn High School in which some unapproved and inflammatory flyers were discovered hanging in a girls’ restroom," she wrote. "The posters were supportive of the Palestinian people and critical of the Israeli government. While the posters urged everyone not to be antisemitic, statements were inflammatory and offensive.

"The flyers were immediately removed and the Millburn Police were called in to begin an investigation. The investigation included conversations and searching our video cameras to find who might have put them up. However, there have been no offenders identified at this time.

"This particular incident is still under investigation, and it may take time to discover the offenders. When we do, there will be disciplinary action.

"Any acts of hate that are based on antisemitism, racism, or any other form of discrimination, have no place in Millburn Schools. We continue to spread this message to our students, staff and community, and we hope you will join us in these efforts as we work together as ONE MILLBURN to embrace our diversity and make Millburn a safe place to live, learn, and grow."
