The driver – an 83-year-old Essex Fells resident – told officers that she hit the brake prior to the crash but the car wouldn’t stop. Further investigation showed that she may have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake pedal, police said.

The driver suffered a foot injury and was taken to Mountainside Hospital in Montclair for treatment.
