MLK 2025 In Livingston: Day Of Service, Closures, Garbage/Recycling
Livingston is getting ready to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day for 2025. Here are some ways to pay tribute to the holiday.
LIVINGSTON, NJ — Livingston is getting ready to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day for 2025.
All township offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 20 for the holiday. All offices will reopen during regular business hours on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Garbage and recycling will be collected according to the normal Monday schedule. Any questions should be directed to Livingston’s collection vendors:

DAY OF SERVICE
The Livingston Committee for Diversity & Inclusion (LCDI) will commemorate King’s enduring legacy with an activity-filled day of service on Monday, Jan. 20.

According to a news release from the group:
“This day serves as a reminder that Dr. King’s dream of a better world lives on through our collective efforts. Setting aside time to volunteer for the MLK Day of Service offers an opportunity to connect with the community and pay tribute to Dr. King’s enduring legacy. Each act of kindness towards those in need within our broader community can have a significant impact.”
Volunteers can join the group at the Livingston Senior/Community Center, 204 Hillside Avenue, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. to participate in hands-on service and craft projects.
The following organizations will be sharing their projects:
- Girl Scout Troop 20309: Making bracelets for Mount Peasant Elementary School’s “Words of Encouragement” program
- Kiwanis Club of Livingston: Assembling kits for the homeless
- Livingston Chinese Association: Collecting non-perishable food
- Livingston Girl Scout Troop 20290 & Cranford Girl Scout Troop 40903: Creating MLK Day posters and performing a reading of “Let the Children March”
- Livingston High School & Heritage Middle School Muslim Students Association: Assembling self-care kits
- Livingston League of Women Voters: Voter registration, civics games, “Ask the Mayor” session with Mayor Ed Meinhardt
- Livingston Lions Club: Offering free vision screenings
- Livingston Neighbors Helping Neighbors: Making PB & J sandwiches with Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center for people in Newark
- Livingston Police Department: Running an anti-bullying poster contest
- Livingston Rotary Club: Crafting cards for seniors at Care One
- NAACP Oranges & Maplewood: Offering member registration
- National Charity League: Collecting books (pre-k to 6th grade)
- Sanskriti: Assembling hygiene kits for the homeless
- Temple Beth Shalom: Assembling snack packs
In addition, the West Essex Alliance of Youth Leaders will be collecting pet supplies for Jersey Cares’ animal shelter program and making cards for hospital patients.

- 9:30 a.m. - Welcome from Mayor Ed Meinhardt and words from Rabbi Simeon Cohen on behalf of the Livingston Clergy
- 9:32 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. - Service projects
- 11:00 a.m. - Livingston Symphony Orchestra (LSO) performance
- 11:05 a.m. - Remarks from Lady Trisha Scipio of the NAACP: Oranges & Maplewood Branch
- 11:15 a.m. – Livingston High School Black Student Union presentation including MLK Speech
- 11:27 a.m. - Rabbi Vaisberg recites Rabbi Prinz speech
- 11:30 a.m. - LSO plays “We Shall Overcome”
