Company has been in business for 88 years

For 88 years Capitol Lighting has been kept the feel of a small business while still providing its customers with quality products.

David Hudson, general manager of the Capitol Lighting at 353 Route 35, Eatontown, said the store is celebrating its latest birthday with a charitable fundraiser that is benefiting Habitat For Humanity.

The store's Making Lives Brighter campaign, kicked off on June 1. The campaign is a partnership where customers are able to donate their old lighting fixtures to any Capitol Lighting showroom in South Florida and New Jersey to be repurposed in a Habitat for Humanity home or sold at one of their Re-Stores. The campaign will run through the end of August.

The Eatontown store celebrated the campaign with an event on June 8 where a mobile LED truck was on display for the public. Guests could also eat at one of three lunch trucks; Max's Hot Dogs of Long Branch, Piece O' Cake Bakery, of Shrewsbury and Home By The Range of Jersey City.

Hudson said the event was like a "mini street fair" and said the event was "very successful."

"We are just trying to be part of the community," Hudson said. "We've been in Eatontown for over 30 years."

Capitol Lighting was founded when Max Lebersfeld, an electrical contractor and recent immigrant from Austria-Hungary, opened an affordable lighting store in Newark, NJ. Four generations later, the company has expanded the concept to four locations in Southeast Florida  and four in New Jersey.

The stores sell lighting fixtures, ceiling fans and small accent furniture, according to Hudson.

"Being part of the business is like being a part of a family," Hudson said. "There are employees that have been working for (Capitol Lighting) for over 40 years."
