The beloved Festival of Trees returns to the Somerset County Park Commission Environmental Education Center Dec. 5 through 28 (closed Dec. 24 and 25). Visitors can enjoy holiday music as they explore the imaginative displays, each one filled with thoughtful touches. The suggested $5 donation supports the event.


8. Take a magical ride aboard the Polar Express Train Ride in Phillipsburg.

About 45 minutes from Long Valley, the Polar Express Train Ride brings the classic story to life with car hosts, singing chefs and a soundtrack straight from the film. Kids will have their golden tickets punched, sip hot chocolate, listen to the beloved book and meet Santa, who gifts every passenger a silver sleigh bell—the “first gift of Christmas.” The 90-minute journey is filled with music, characters and festive cheer. Set inside a restored 19th-century stone mill, this museum’s exhibits feature contemporary art, craft and design from emerging and internationally recognized artists, all set against views of the Raritan River. The museum also hosts workshops and classes for visitors of all ages. Admission is $7 for adults, $5 for seniors/military/students and free for children under 12. Exhibits are open Wednesday through Sunday.


12. Soak in the season’s magic at the Morristown Christmas Festival.

A 35-minute drive brings you to the heartwarming Christmas Festival at the Morristown Green, a month-long celebration filled with lights, music and family activities. Each weekend in December—plus select Fridays—you’ll find Santa photos, crafts, live entertainment, ice sculpture demos and rides on a miniature train. The Green glows with thousands of sparkling lights, making evening strolls especially festive.
