LONG VALLEY, NJ — Douglas Richard Carter, 80, passed away suddenly, into the presence of the Lord, on June 29, 2022. He was a resident of Long Valley for 48 years. Doug was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a man after God’s own heart and his life was a testimony to it.

Doug was born October 17, 1941, to Robert and Florence Carter and grew up in Maplewood, NJ with his sister Barbara Ann. In addition to being an Eagle Scout, Doug earned the God and Country Award through the Boy Scouts of America. He received his undergraduate degree from Western Maryland College and held two graduate degrees in Business Administration and Accounting from Fairleigh Dickinson University. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army, served his country for four years in Alaska and Korea, and was a member of the Veteran A.V.A.W.T. Post 1776 in Long Valley. After the army, Doug worked as a Telecom Manager in the Bell system – he began his career with Bell Labs, then went onto AT&T, Lucent Technologies, and retired from Avaya.

God gave Doug many talents and he was a man who used them wisely. He was an avid reader, world traveler, gardener, and loved camping in his RV. As a Civil War enthusiast, he traveled to many battlefields and historic sites across this country, often supplementing the guided tours with his extensive knowledge. He was an active member of the New Jersey Civil War Roundtable.
