Learn more about General George Meade, noted mainly as the General leading the Union forces at Gettysburg. Meade was appointed to command the Army of the Potomac just three days before the battle and arrive on the battlefield after the first action on July 1, 1863.
He organized his forces on favorable ground to fight an effective defensive battle against Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia and repelled a series of massive assaults throughout the next two days. However, what is mainly overlooked is his extensive military career including the battles of Antietam and Chancellorsville and finally the unknown battles of Meade and Lee after Gettysburg
The Washington Township Public Library is offering this program as a public service by the North Jersey Civil War Round Table as a three -part series of Gen. George Meade Takes Command. Dr. Jennifer M. Murray, Assistant Professor of History at Shepherd University in West Virginia, is a military historian currently working on a full-length biography of General George Gordon Meade.
