Long Valley Breaks From State, Votes Against Winning Candidates

Voters went against the winning candidates for both Senate and Congress, and against the winning vote on a school funding question.

LONG VALLEY, NJ β€” Voters in Long Valley split from other voters in their congressional district and in New Jersey, voting against the winning Congressional and Senate candidates and on a state question.

While voters in New Jersey's 7th congressional district voted for Democratic newcomer Tom Malinowski, voters favored incumbent Republican Rep. Leonard Lance. Lance won the town 4,600 to 3,157, but lost the district 131,149 to 136,993.

Long Valley also voted against the winner of the Senate race. The town favored Republican Bob Hugin over Democratic incumbent Bob Menendez 4,969 votes to 2,909 votes. Hugin also won Morris County as a whole, but lost in the state race, with 43.8 percent of the vote to Menendez's 53.1 percent.

Although NJ voters favored a $500 million referendum to improve schools, Long Valley voters didn't. They voted against that question, with 3,949 saying no and 2,171 saying yes. Statewide, the question passed with 52% approving and 48% disapproving.
