Long Valley Health Officials Warn Of Mosquito Breeding Grounds
Health officials have provided tips to keep these pesky, and sometimes life-threatening, insects out of your backyard.
LONG VALLEY, NJ — Officials from the Washington Township Health Department have issued a warning regarding mosquitoes and mosquito-borne illnesses.
Officials say that standing water, often found in bird baths and kiddie pools, is a breeding ground for the pesky, and sometimes life-threatening, insects.
“Mosquitoes aren’t just a nuisance, they can carry serious diseases like West Nile virus, Zika, and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE),” a statement read. “One of the easiest ways to prevent mosquito bites? Get rid of standing water.”

Standing water is an often overlooked occurrence that can be found in buckets, flower pots, toys, bird baths, pet bowls, and tires. Officials recommend flipping these objects upside down when possible, and/or changing their water when applicable.
“Even after dumping water, mosquito eggs can stick to surfaces,” officials said. “Scrub containers to fully eliminate eggs and larvae.”
