Sarah Miller, a Long Valley native and recent Colgate University graduate, has turned a passion for science and a deep commitment to her community into one of the most impressive student profiles in the country. A physics major and biology minor, Sarah was awarded the prestigious Goldwater Scholarship in 2024 for her groundbreaking research modeling artificial neurons to study epilepsy. She contributed to cutting-edge projects involving superconducting circuits and Josephson junctions — research that was highly esteemed by faculty and presented at the Applied Superconductivity Conference later that year, according to The Colgate Maroon-News.

Sarah also excelled beyond the lab. A three-year member of Colgate’s women’s lacrosse team, she was twice named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and served on the team’s leadership council. She helped launch the Colgate chapter of Athlete Ally, advocating for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports, and served as a peer tutor, teaching assistant and career services ambassador. Her ability to balance rigorous academics, athletics and leadership roles earned her the respect of both her teammates and professors.

In a crowning achievement, Sarah was named a Gates Cambridge Scholar — only the second in Colgate’s history. She is currently pursuing an MPhil in clinical neuroscience at Cambridge University, working to further develop Deuterium Metabolic Imaging (DMI) as a viable tool for neuroimaging, before continuing on to a PhD at the joint Harvard-MIT program in medical engineering and medical physics.

From her early days in Long Valley to her future on two of the world’s top campuses, Sarah has proven that big dreams and hard work can open doors across continents.

The future is certainly looking bright in Long Valley! If you know another Star Student making an impact, nominate them today to be featured on Patch!
