Longtime Long Valley Resident, Grandfather Dies At 84

LONG VALLEY, NJ — Ronald D. Moore, a longtime Long Valley resident, died June 18 in his home. He was 84 years old.

Born in New Brunswick, Ron graduated from New Brunswick High School and Rutgers University (Mechanical Engineering). Upon graduation, he married Jane Boorman, also of New Brunswick, and began a career at Picatinny Arsenal. He then left Picatinny and served as a Lieutenant in the US Army Ordnance Corps, stationed in Germany.

At the end of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Jane joined Ron in Germany for the balance of his tour of duty. Following military service, Ron returned to Picatinny and the family settled in Long Valley in 1965. Early in his career, the family lived in Ithaca, NY, where Ron completed a one-year post-graduate Education for Public Management program at Cornell University.

He worked 36 years at the Army’s Armaments R & D Engineering Center, retiring as the Quality Assurance Artillery and Mortar Engineering Division manager in 1999. Ron then worked part-time as a consultant for 11 additional years. He was a Senior Member in the American Society for Quality.

In the past, he also tutored mathematics and coached youth football and lacrosse. He played Freshman lacrosse while at Rutgers, and was involved in the founding of the Long Valley Junior Lacrosse program in the mid-1970s, and the subsequent adoption of Lacrosse as a sport at West Morris Central High School. Ron loved being a “regular” at his local grandchildren’s sporting activities.

He loved animals, country gospel, folk, and 50s and 60s music, as well as Banjo pickin’. Ron was predeceased by his parents Francis and Lillian Moore and his brother Barry Moore.

Ron is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Jane Boorman Moore, two sons, R. Douglas Moore, Jr, and his wife Susan of Long Valley, and Curtis Moore and his wife Jill, of Fairfax, VA, and was the proud grandfather to four grandchildren in Long Valley (Ron, Dan, Amy, and Eric), and two in Virginia (Bradley and Wesley). Ron was predeceased by his parents Francis and Lillian Moore and his brother Barry Moore.

Ron’s visitation will be on Wednesday, June 28 from 5 to 8 pm. Funeral at the William J. Leber Funeral Home, 15 Furnace Rd. Chester, NJ 07930. The Funeral Service will be on Thursday, June 29 at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial shall be at German Valley Cemetery, Coleman Road, Long Valley immediately following the service.
