It was a masterclass across classes – from freshman Ryan Tie (106) to senior Tommy Borgia (285) – with sophomore Deacon Frayne (215) and junior Brody Neill (138) in between – these four wrestlers went 3-0 Saturday (Jan. 3) at the Kittatinny quad.

Junior Jacob Harrison (144) and senior Rob Fazzino (175) added two big wins each as the Pack defeated Kittatinny 54-15 and Morris Knolls 42-31, before falling to state group 1 champion Delaware Valley 54-21.

Brody Neill has started the season 9-1, and has not lost since Bergen Catholic on opening day.
State medalist Borgia received two forfeits on the day, likely not his last.

Tie, Muttart and Dymnicki Lead Pack Over Kittatinny 54-15

WMC whacked the whisker wearers, as the Wolfpack took 10 of 14 bouts from the Cougars to start the quad.

Tie faced #84 ranked Cooper Crawn in a rematch, after pinning Crawn at the Caldwell Tournament. Could it have been a fortunate fall vs. a superior wrestler for the inexperienced Tie? Saturday Tie removed any doubt, putting on a takedown clinic for the 22-7 victory by technical fall.

Down 6-0, freshman Van Muttart (126) locked down his first-ever victory, beating a senior Cougar with a third period headlock for the 8-6 win.

Later, senior Alex Dymnicki (190) nabbed possibly his best-ever win, pinning #132 ranked Roman Volpe.

Harrison and Fazzino pinned top-100 wrestlers. Another pin by Frayne, a rematch tech fall by Kurtis Beyer (165, improving on a Caldwell Tournament major), and forfeits to Nick Galvin (113) and Borgia rounded out the scoring.

WMC went 5-2 versus Kittatinny at the Caldwell Tournament

Deacon Frayne is the team wins leader at 11-2.
Rob Fazzino delivered two big wins on the day.
Jacob Harrison is 6-5 against brutal competition, resulting in a #28 rank in NJ.

Marold’s Gambit, Vazquez Signature Win Lift WMC Over Morris Knolls 42-31

After Jacob Reed (120) got the Pack on the board with a pin, Mason Vazquez (132) returned from injury to deliver possibly the best win of his career, 12-10 over #51 region qualifier Nathan Gomes.

Morris Knolls (MK) coach Anthony Vasile made the first big move of the match, forfeiting to Neill, and bumping up his #90 ranked 4-2 senior Samuel Allen. But Harrison made the Golden Eagles pay, pinning Allen at 1:45 in the first.

After MK won three in a row to take a 25-21 lead, it was WMC coach Chris Marold’s turn to step up to the chessboard.

The 175 lb. bout was scheduled to be a Morris Knolls Tournament finals rematch, in which Fazzino fell 9-8 to #17 ranked state qualifier Luke Shivas. At 190, MK’s Anthony Wagner ranked higher than WMC’s Chris Kowalik understudy.

Marold knew he had a chance to win both. But there was also a chance of losing both, which would likely mean an MK win. So Marold had Fazzino’s backup Ashton Babinec take one for the team against hammer Shivas, and bumped Fazzino to 190. In just 76 seconds, Fazzino delivered the tide-turning pin, exactly as Marold planned.

A Frayne pin and Borgia forfeit secured the victory, and Tie finished the scoring with an impressive 6-4 win over a top-100 wrestler.

At the MKT, the teams were 2-2 head to head, but Knolls placed second and WMC seventh with five starters not wrestling.

Coach Chris Marold (right) played the chess board perfectly.
Rob Fazzino bumped to 190 pounds to deliver on coach Marold's plan.
Ryan Tie is 6-5 on the season.

DVR Terriers Bite WMC, 54-21

Two undefeated squads faced off in the quad finale, and the state champion Terriers, 19-3 last season, won 10 bouts versus the Pack to dominate. Only the undefeated foursome scored points for the Pack

Four bouts were Goles Tournament finals rematches, though the first two were closer this time.

Neill defeated #25 district finalist Tye Falkenstein again, but instead of a first period pin, Neill took a 4-4 tie into the third and gutted out a 5-4 nail biter.

Harrison closed the gap vs. #17 district champ and state alternate Michael Hasson, falling 6-5 (compared to 8-3 last bout).

Frayne pinned #62 Luke Cyphert after defeating him with a first period tech at Goles.

Borgia finally got to wrestle, and methodically pinned #41 Luken Alberdi in the second, again.

Tie provided the only other Wolfpack victory, jumping to a large lead before winning by injury forfeit.

DVR finished above WMC at Goles, going 5-5 head to head, but WMC prevailed 3-1 in the finals.

Last year WMC took two of three at this quad, losing to DVR 46-23, beating MK 45-23, and beating Kittatinny 54-22

Tommy Borgia remains undefeated at 9-0.

Next Up

The new year continues at Mount Olive Jan. 6 and High Point on the 7th. (Schedule based on Garden State HS Wrestling calendar). The Jan. 10 Roxbury quad includes Livingston and Holmdel. Jan. 17 competition is TBA. Mark calendars for WMC hosting Mendham Jan. 20, and the Morris County Tournament at Mt. Olive the 24th. WMC visits Hackettstown the 26th, then hosts Pope John the 28th, before heading to the Pascack Valley quad with Raritan and Jackson on the 31st. February starts at Morris Hills Feb. 4, and then a tri at Governor Livingston Feb. 7. Senior night is home versus Jefferson Feb. 11, then home again Feb. 13 against Morristown.

That takes us (hopefully) to the State Section playoffs, with quarterfinals and semifinals on Feb. 16.
