West Morris Central High School Students Commended For National Merit Program Performances

Several students were sent letters of commendation for their academic achievements, from the school and National Merit program.

LONG VALLEY, NJ — Several West Morris Central High School students have been ranked as “Commended Students” in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program, for their academic achievements.

Although these students didn’t make the semi-final rounds for National Merit Scholarships, they are among 34,000 Commended Students throughout the United States, who were in the top 50,000 across the country for their Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The following students were not only recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program, but West Morris Central High School: Norah Bumrah, Brandon Chen, Shannon DelGuercio, Trevor Hennebery, Alex Hoberman, Maiju Hoerning, Eric Lusskin, Andrew Messaritis and Liana Torlucci.

“These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation,” the organization wrote to the school about the students. “We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Andrew C. Miller of West Morris Central High School was a National Merit Scholarship Semi-Finalist for 2022, one of about 16,000 who could go to the next rounds for a potential scholarship, after taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/Merit Scholarship Qualifying test.

Miller also received a letter of commendation from West Morris Central High School Principal Timothy Rymer.

According to the organization, a non-profit group that runs the program, only one percent of high schoolers make the semi-finalist round.

Miller is in the running for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships, to be awarded in Spring 2022, from a scholarship pool worth $30 million.
