MADISON, NJ — Residents of a Morris County apartment building were displaced due to a two-alarm fire on Sunday night.

Authorities said that on Sunday, at approximately 9:13 p.m., they were called to 17 Madison Avenue, Unit 56, for a report of a structure fire.

Emergency responders found that smoke and flames were visible coming from the basement of unit 56. Members of the Madison Police Department and additional fire personnel began initial suppression efforts while verifying that all occupants had evacuated.

The fire was primarily contained in the basement of unit 56, but officials requested a second alarm due to the high heat and intense fire conditions. As more workers arrived, first responders halted the spread of the fire and eventually brought it under control.

"Although there was no fire damage to any of the surrounding apartments, one adjoining unit received smoke damage," Madison officials said.

No serious injuries were reported among the tenants, but police said that one person was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation.

One firefighter was also injured as a result of the fire but has since been released from the hospital, officials said.

According to the Red Cross of New Jersey, its Disaster Action Team quickly responded to the fire scene, assisting three families with Red Cross emergency aid for temporary shelter, food, clothes and other immediate needs.

The fire remains under the investigation of the Madison Fire Prevention Bureau in conjunction with the Madison Police Department Detective Bureau.

Fire personnel from Chatham Borough, Florham Park, Cedar Knolls, Morris Township, Morristown and Morris Plains also responded to the incident.
