Cops: Man Sleeping in Car Had Cocaine

A 52-year-old Kearny man who was parked on Prospect Street is facing drug charges, authorities said.

A man found sleeping in a car on Prospect Street near Main Street was charged with possession of cocaine and drug paraphernalia after he allegedly was determined to have the drug, said.

Luis Torres, 52, of Kearny was arrested by Sgt. John Miscia around 4 a.m. Sunday, according to a police news release. Patrolman Anthony Maccario assisted with the arrest.

Miscia saw Torres sleeping in the car and, after conducting a field interview, determined he had the drug, police said.

According to police, a white powdery substance allegedly was in plain view on the center console and on the driver's seat, and after being asked about the substance, Torres allegedly admitted it was cocaine.

Torres was taken to headquarters for processing and release pending a court appearance, authorities said.
