Driver Caught In Hit And Run With Pedestrian In Madison

A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle on Main Street near Waverly Place in Madison on Thursday evening.

MADISON, NJ — Madison Police have identified the driver in a hit-and-run crash that sent a 64-year-old female to the hospital Thursday evening.

Charles J. Bender, 54, of Rockaway Township, New Jersey, has been charged with third-degree endangering an injured victim in connection with a hit-and-run crash on Madison's Main Street.

Bender has also been charged with a number of traffic violations, officials said.

The pedestrian suffered non-life threatening injuries in the incident and was taken to Morristown Medical Center for treatment.

"The identity of the individual will not be released at this time," police said.

According to police, the incident occurred on Main Street near Waverly Place at 5:20 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4.

Following the crash, the vehicle, a gray 2005 Toyota Corolla with passenger-side damage and a missing passenger-side hubcap, fled the scene, police said.

The vehicle turned onto Waverly Place, left onto Lincoln Place, left onto Prospect Street before crossing over Main Street, and continued on Greenwood Avenue towards Florham Park.

According to police, Bender, the driver of the Toyota, was arrested and charged with one count of third-degree endangering an injured victim and was taken to the Morris County Correctional Facility.
