ICYMI: Madison Police Cracking Down on Distracted Driving

Police will be participating in a statewide crackdown on distracted driving, beginning April 1.

The Madison Police Department will be cracking down on distracted driving as part of a statewide campaign, beginning on April 1 and ending April 21.

“Driver inattention has been a major contributing factor in nearly 750,000 motor vehicle crashes in the state since 2009 and nationwide,” Madison Police said on Facebook. “3,328 were killed in distracted driving crashes in 2012 alone.”

Police reminded motorists that a summons issued for using a cell phone without a hands-free device results in a mandatory court appearance and a fine between $200 and $400 for the first offense. The fine increases to $400 to $600 for the second offense and a third offense could results in three points on your license and a fine of $600 to $800.
