Synagogue Threats Spur Increased Vigilance In Madison
The FBI's warning about a "broad threat" to New Jersey synagogues prompted Madison police to take extra precautions.
MADISON, NJ — In response to an FBI warning of a widespread threat to synagogues in New Jersey, Madison police increased security measures and the presence of law enforcement throughout the borough, police said Friday morning.
The local police response comes after the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued an alert to New Jersey synagogues on Thursday, warning of a "broad threat" and urging staff to take precautions.
"Madison Police Department takes these types of threats seriously and is working with the Morris County Sheriff’s Office and Prosecutors Office to provide extra security measures throughout the community. Residents are asked to stay alert," police said.

The FBI issued the warning Thursday afternoon saying it had "received credible information of a broad threat to synagogues in NJ," the alert read. "We ask at this time that you take all security precautions to protect your community and facility."
According to Matt Platkin, the attorney general of New Jersey, local, state, and federal agencies were working together to coordinate law enforcement efforts. He also urged everyone to exercise caution.

"Please do not be alarmed if you observe an increase in police presence as we are taking these steps in an abundance of caution," Platkin said. "We also call upon New Jersey residents to be extra vigilant and if you see suspicious activity please report it to your local authorities without delay."
Law enforcement officials urged anyone who sees something unusual or of concern, to call 911 or call the Madison Police Department immediately.
