$612K High School Track Resurfacing Project Awarded In Mahwah
A $612,000 contract to resurface the track at Mahwah High School was awarded at a recent Board of Education meeting.
MAHWAH, NJ — A $612,000 contract was awarded to resurface the depreciating track at Mahwah High School to extend its lifespan by another 10 to 15 years.
The work, expected to begin summer 2023, will include a new rubberized surface and repair the subsurface in some areas to prevent future cracking and separation of the rubber surface, school district Superintendent Michael DeTuro said.
Installed approximately 15 years ago, the existing all-weather track is nearing the end of its useful life, DeTuro said. The district anticipates full replacement of the surface and subsurface, when the end of life for the newly resurfaced track is reached.

"The track is vital to our educational program and facility," DeTuro said. "This component of our facility is home to our largest athletic programs — cross country, and winter and spring track & field, which serve hundreds of student-athletes each day."
During the Oct. 19 meeting, the Mahwah Board of Education moved to award the project, which will be fully funded from the district's capital reserve account, to manufacturers FieldTurf and Crafco.

In addition to the track surface, drainage basins that have deteriorated will be replaced where necessary. This part of the project will help ensure that rainwater is properly flowing through and off the track and turf field.
"Proper drainage is vital to the health of both surfaces and helps ensure a safe environment for our student-athletes and the community that uses the track for recreational exercise," DeTuro said.
