Art Exhibit Opening in Mahwah to Feature Five Female Artists

An art exhibit opening in Mahwah next week will tackle issues of femininity through art by examining the perspectives of five different female artists from around the world.

The Body is Present: Women at Work is set to open inside the Kresge Gallery inside Ramapo College’s Berrie Center next Wednesday, according to a recent release from the college.

The exhibit will feature works by five different female artists - Samira Abbassy, Maria Brito, Kate Gilmore, Julia Kunin and Anahita Vossoughi. The artists work in different mediums, and represent different world views – Abbassy was born in Iran, Brito in Cuba, Vossoughi in Canada, and Gilmore and Kunin are from the US.

The exhibit is meant to examine the way women are seen in the world, and in art, the release said.

“The Body is Present and its five artists offer a diversity of personal experiences, deep relationships with multiple cultures and art historical perspectives,” curator Deborah Frizzell, Ph.D., professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History and Theory at William Paterson University said in the release.

“Born between 1947 and 1975, each woman brings a fresh interpretation to her chosen medium, mingling animate with inanimate, animal with human, the abstract with the literal, where old distinctions become irrelevant and new sci-fi, hybrid realities emerge.” 

To kick off the new exhibit, the Berrie Center is hosting an opening reception on September 18 from 5 to 7 p.m. Artists’ and curator’s talks will begin at 6 p.m. The exhibition will be open to the public Tuesdays through Fridays until November 20. Get more information at (201) 684-7147.
