Bank Robber Threatens Teller, Steals Thousands In Bergen County: Police

A Teaneck bank was robbed of several thousand dollars after a man threatened to hurt an employee and made off with the money, police said.

TEANECK, NJ — A Teaneck man robbed a Chase Bank of several thousand dollars after passing an employee a note threatening bodily injury and then making off with the money, Deputy Police Chief Andrew McGurr said of the Wednesday incident.

Following a 911 call from an employee of the bank on Cedar Lane, a perimeter was established, and an inter-agency effort was coordinated between FBI special agents, Bergen County Sheriff's officers and K-9 units to find the suspect.

Leo Jones, Jr., 69, was identified as the suspect matching a description provided by bank employees and was depicted in bank surveillance video. Jones was also someone an officer was familiar with and had recognized as a resident of a nearby apartment, police said.

Jones was seen in surveillance footage leaving and re-entering the apartment around the time of the robbery. Shortly after he was identified, Jones left the building, wearing different clothing and was stopped by detectives positioned on the perimeter.

He was arrested, and a subsequent search of his apartment revealed the clothing he had worn during the robbery, along with the cash proceeds. No weapons were brandished nor threatened during the robbery.

As a result of the investigation, Jones was charged with robbery, a second-degree crime, and theft, a third-degree crime. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending an initial court appearance.
