Fans Rush Field, Police Break Up 'Chaos' At Football Game In Bergen County: Police
A "bench-clearing" incident between St. Mary and Harrison High Schools ended the football game early on Saturday, police said.
RUTHERFORD, NJ — A Rutherford high school football game ended early Saturday due to a "bench-clearing" fight, borough police Chief John Russo said.
Fans rushed the field, as the incident unfolded at St. Mary High School in a game against Harrison High School; the incident was initially isolated to players and coaches, Russo said. Police were needed, he added, to restore calm, as teams and coaches "cleared the benches," or left the sidelines.
Accusations of several assaults have emerged, though officers were unable to determine what happened at the time due to the "chaos" of the scene, police said. No injuries were reported.

Russo said that the game was nearing completion when it was cancelled, though St. Mary had seemingly cemented the win at 30-0.
Police are investigating and reviewing videos for evidence and to identify anyone involved. Both the home and visiting teams, Russo noted, have been cooperative with authorities.

Charges are pending further investigation.
"It is an unfortunate incident when a high school sporting event deteriorates to these types of actions, but for spectators to enter the field to take matters into their own hands is unacceptable," Russo said.
