Bergen Man Choked, Assaulted, And Robbed Woman: Police

A Bergen County man was arrested after he assaulted and robbed a woman acquaintance, police said.

Wilby Tapia, 34, of Clifton was charged with aggravated assault and robbery, said Garfield Police Capt. Darren Succorowski.

The 28-year-old Woodland Park woman flagged patrolling police officers down near Cambridge Avenue March 2, Succorowski said.

She told police that Tapia grabbed her hair, pulled her down, and then assaulted and choked her, the captain said.

Tapia then searched the woman's purse and took her belongings before leaving her, Succorowski said.

Police investigated and Tapia was arrested Tuesday night and taken to the Bergen County Jail.
