MAHWAH, NJ — Mahwah Boy Scout Troop 50 Badger Patrol helped make fishing line recycling containers this week that will be installed at Lake Henry, situated near Continental Soldiers Park, and other fishing spots in the township, the troop said in a Facebook post.

A frequent provider of community service, the scouting troop was contacted by Mahwah's Environmental Commission to take this on, and the Badgers, one of the patrols, rose to the task, Scoutmaster Anthony DeSando told Patch.

DeSando said the Badgers cut PVC pipes, glued fittings on the ends, and then placed the labels on the tubes. Next, the Badgers, along with other patrols, will install the five newly assembled containers on Nov. 5 in a troop-wide event.

"The Scouts go fishing a few times a year," DeSando said, "so this is a community service project they can relate to."

At the event, some of the Scouts will remove fishing lines from trees and shrubs around the lake, as others install the recycling containers.

"We look forward to installing (the containers) this fall and helping to clean up the fishing line," DeSando added.
