Hidden Hole Swallows Car On Road In Bergen County: Photos

A hole hidden by water from a main break in Bergen County swallowed a car, police said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — Route 80 isn't the only road in North Jersey swallowing cars this month. When the tiny town of Rockleigh Borough suffered a water main break last week, a hidden hole swallowed a car, said police.

Police in neighboring Northvale Borough said that just after 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, they were dispatched to the area of 6 Volvo Drive in Rockleigh for a road collapse.

Police determined that an overnight water main break had caused the hole, they said. A driver was unable to see the crater due to the large amount of water in the roadway, police said.

The driver was able to get out of the car uninjured, police said.

Northvale Police Chief Howard Ostrow said the car was an older model Nissan (not a Volvo).

Veolia Water had a repair crew onsite immediately and the roadway was reopened that evening at 11 p.m., Ostrow said.

The Rockleigh and Norwood fire departments assisted at the scene, said police.

Rockleigh is a small borough near the New Jersey/New York border.
