Hit-And-Run Crash Leaves Bergen Co. Woman Dead, Man Charged: Police

A hit-and-run crash left a pedestrian woman dead, prompting charges for a 26-year-old Paterson man, the prosecutor's office said.

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A man was charged in a hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian in Bergen County, according to authorities.

Victor Diaz-Castaneda, 26, of Paterson, was identified as the driver in the Jan. 3 crash that left a 51-year-old Garfield resident dead. The pedestrian, Shazia Faazal, was taken to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead as a result of injuries, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.

Diaz-Castaneda was charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death, and endangering an injured victim. He was accused of hitting the woman around 8:51 p.m. as she crossed Outwater Lane in Garfield, and then driving away prior to police arrival, Musella said.

Diaz-Castaneda was charged Monday with the aforementioned offenses, and served with multiple motor vehicle summonses. He was remanded to the Bergen County Jail pending an initial court appearance, the prosecutor's office said.
