Luxury Car Heist Spurs Wild Chase, Mahwah Cop Car Crash, Teen's Arrest
A 17-year-old caused an officer to swerve off the road during a multi-town police pursuit that ended in the teen's arrest, officials said.
MAHWAH, NJ — A wild car chase saw a teen steal a luxury car then drive a Mahwah cop off the road early Wednesday morning, according to authorities.
The 17-year-old Newark nabbed the stolen Maserati SUV in Franklin Lakes, but soon found cops on his tail just after 6 a.m., officials said.
Cops chased the teen in the stolen car through Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, Allendale, Waldwick and then Ridgewood — where finally the car broke down near Route 17, police Capt. Guido Bussinelli said.

Earlier in the chase, the teen "intentionally swerved" at Mahwah officer Robert Birney and forced him to jump the curb to avoid a crash. The officer was not injured, nor was his patrol car damaged, police said.
The Newark teen was charged with eluding and attempted aggravated assault on an officer following his arrest in Ridgewood, the last stop on the multi-jurisdictional police chase, Bussinelli said.
