Mahwah Cop, Fire Chiefs Given Life Saving Awards

The first responders rescued an unconscious man from a fire in September.

MAHWAH, NJ - A Mahwah police officer and two assistant fire chiefs were recognized by township officials for rescuing an unconscious man from a burning condo.

Officer Thomas Mitchell, Assistant Chief Cory Meyers and Assistant Chief Tom Loreto were each presented with Life Saving Awards during the Oct. 10 mayor and council meeting.

First responders were called to a home on Hemmingway Lane in Ridge Gardens early one September morning on a report of a fire, according to information provided by police.

After Mitchell observed smoke and flames through the condo’s windows, all three men entered the home and found “an unresponsive party on the couch,” police said.

The man suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

“If not for the heroic and unselfish actions of the three individuals, the occupant would have perished,” a proclamation in their honor said.
