Mahwah Library Accepting Food For Fines Thru Dec. 30

The library will forgive $1 in fines for each nonperishable food item brought to the checkout desk. Patrons can have up to $20 forgiven.

MAHWAH, NJ - Through Dec. 30, Mahwah Library patrons can donate nonperishable food items to close out overdue fines.

The effort is part of the "Food for Fines" program, a national initiative that aims to help feed the hungry while giving library-goers a chance to have their fines forgiven.

Here's how it works, according to the Mahwah Library:

  • The library will forgive $1 in fines for each nonperishable food item brought to the checkout desk. Patrons can pay up to $20 of their library fines with donated items.
  • Patrons must put food items in boxes or plastic bags.
  • Homemade items, open packages, perishable items, repackaged or expired items are not permitted.
  • A valid library card must be presented.
  • Overdue items must be returned in good condition before the donation can be applied as payment.
  • Food for Fines applies to late fees only and may not be applied toward replacement fees for lost or damaged materials, lost cards, or future overdue fines.
  • All food will be donated to the Mahwah Center For Food Action, which will distribute the items to those in need throughout northern Bergen County.
  • The Food for Fines offer will not extend to other BCCLS libraries.

The Mahwah Center for Food Action has requested items with a long shelf-life, including:

  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly
  • Canned meats
  • Canned fruits
  • Canned vegetables and tomato products
  • Canned soups and beans
  • Pasta and pasta sauce
  • Boxed macaroni and cheese
  • Rice
  • Bottled 100% fruit juice
  • Hot and cold cereals
  • Infant formula & baby food
  • Diapers & baby wipes
  • Laundry detergent
  • Dental hygiene products.
