Mahwah PD on Ice Conditions: Police Will Follow Select School Bus Routes to Ensure There Are No Problems

Mahwah Police say the Township’s main concern is the “expected freezing rain causing hazardous driving conditions” after a wintry hazardous mix of precipitation hit New Jersey and forced Mahwah Public Schools to have a delayed opening Monday.

Mahwah Police Chief James Batelli said he “began conversations with school Superintendent Dr. Lauren Schoen on what impact the storm would have on school and after school activities” on Sunday. “The final decision rests with the Superintendent, but after consultation, a delayed opening was agreed upon without the need for a full closure.”

But Chief Batelli says that since Mahwah is a large school district with a number of bus routes, “officers will follow select school bus routes to ensure that there are no problems, especially in areas where there are hills” when children leave school.

“The decision is always for the safety of the students, parents and staff,” Chief Batelli said.

He also says the Mahwah Department of Public Works “is aware of these routes so extra attention is made in these areas during the time buses are scheduled to travel on them.”
