MAHWAH, NJ — A project phase to construct two new, two-story structures at the site of the Bergen County Law and Public Safety Institute in Mahwah is now complete, a county spokesperson said.

Breaking ground in June 2021, a modernization project on the 281 Campgaw Road institute was completed in two phases — the first of which was in October and the second of which will feature a mixed-use and a residential structure, the spokesperson said.

On Tuesday, Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco and the Board of County Commissioners will mark the completion of the project with a ceremony.

In October, a training annex opened at the institute to ensure first responders are prepared to adapt to changes in the public safety environment and can perform their duties "at the highest level," Patch reported.

The annex, Tedesco said in his State of the County address on Feb. 28, supports regional cross-disciplinary training on real-life threat scenarios, allowing first responders to train in "life-replicating conditions."

Now, the county is celebrating the completion of a mixed-use structure with five fire simulators, and a residential structure with an attached garage "to teach fire academy trainees how to respond to class-A fire materials," a spokesperson said.
