Mahwah Sheraton To Lay Off Dozens Of Workers By End Of Year

A notice says the Sheraton in Mahwah plans to lay off 91 workers in November. What's next for the site?

MAHWAH, NJ — The Sheraton in Mahwah plans to lay off 91 employees in mid-November, according to its recent notice to the state government.

The move comes amid the town's plan to redevelop the area to meet its state affordable housing obligation, including previously designating the area as an Area in Need of Redevelopment.

The designation gives the town certain powers, including eminent domain.

That plan appeared on the most recent Planning Board agenda last month. The next Planning Board meeting is Sept. 11.

So what's the fate of the structure?

The hotel's reservation page reflects room prices of more than $880 per night starting in 2024. This is much higher than the usual under-$200 rate.

Messages for the corporate headquarters and the hotel general manager left Tuesday morning were not returned by Wednesday afternoon.

By state law, large businesses planning to lay off more than 50 workers have to notify the government at least 60 days in advance.
