Mahwah Mayor Appoints Capt. Jaffe As Acting Police Director

Mayor John Roth appointed Jaffe to the permanent position of chief, but the Town Council did not vote on the appointment.

MAHWAH, NJ — Mayor John Roth has appointed Capt. Stephen Jaffe as acting director of the police department.

Jaffe's appointment went into effect Friday.

Jaffe has the same authority, rights, and responsibilities as the chief of police would. Jaffe, previously the department's second-in-command, was appointed to the position after former Chief James Batelli retired Thursday.

Jaffe's appointment is temporary and could last as long as 90 days, or until the Township Council approves a permanent chief, whichever comes first.

Roth said he was advised by township attorney Brian Campion that Jaffe's appointment to acting director did not require approval of the council.

Roth said he will work with the council to find a "workable, long-term solution" regarding the vacant chief's job.

"I am confident we can work this out," Roth said. "Everyone has the township's best interest at heart."

Roth appointed Jaffe to the position of chief Sunday, a move that the majority of the Township Council had to approve. The council was slated to vote on the appointment Wednesday, but postponed the vote so officials could obtain more information and make an informed decision, Council President David May previously said.

Seven candidates, including Jaffe, another captain, and five lieutenants, were considered and interviewed for the chief's position. Candidates were interviewed for one and a half to two hours each and both captains went on additional one hour interviews.
