MAHWAH, NJ — A Mahwah High School senior was named a 2023 National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.

Of the 1.5 million entrants, Luke Blazejewski was selected among 16,000 semifinalists, representing less than one percent of all high school seniors who took the rigorous PSAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, according to the high school's website.

Blazejewski will now have the opportunity continue in the competition for some 7,250 scholarships worth nearly $28 million that will be offered next spring.

About 95% of semifinalists will win a scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title; although, to be considered, Blazejewski will need to fulfill several academic requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition.

"Congratulations to Luke on this wonderful accomplishment," the high school said.

Several other Mahwah students were named commended students in the program, meaning they placed among the top 34,000 scorers throughout the U.S. Although they will not continue in the competition for scholarship awards, the students are still being recognized for their scholastic talent.

Those students are: Mason Anton, Nideesh Kumar, Charlotte Kaya, Elizabeth Mastrangelo, Kiera Meylakh, Cyril Rikh, Meghana Sankar, Tommaso Smith, Aarnav Tendulkar, Joseph Tomaskovic, and Vicky Yang.

“These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation," a NMSC spokesperson said.
