The power went out as a result of a power surge at the Rockland Electric substation serving the campus.
The safety devices that protect against surge damage automatically shut off the power so the equipment is not damaged, much like a fuse blows at your house if there is a power surge.

Campus officials were able to reset the protection devices on their end of the electric service and restore normal operations to the campus. When Rockland Electric crews arrived, the power was already back on.
