Roadside Farm Stands in Bergen County

These family-owned farm markets that began as roadside farm stands still offer the freshest seasonal produce (and poultry!)

In the last century, Bergen County had an abundance of family-owned farms such as Tice's Farm and Van Riper's Farm, that are now housing complexes or strip malls.

Most of the farms opened roadside stands that through the years have evolved into year-round markets that offer the freshest seasonal produce, home-made baked goods, preserves and more. Here are the ones that still stand. And they're all family-owned:

In addition to offering in-season produce, The Farm in Closter has a large assortment of pumpkins, squash and gourds to choose from. And if it's mums or other fall flowers you're looking for, they have them in all colors and sizes.

Demarest Farms

The Demarest family is one of the founding families of Bergen County, having arrived here in 1678. The area of land that Demarest Farms occupies was bought in 1886 by George Washington Demarest, and has been farmed by a member of the Demarest family ever since.

During the early years of the last century, the farm set up a road stand where the family sold fruit picked from the orchards. Soon, people were traveling from all around Bergen County to buy seasonal produce.

That little roadstand has turned into a farm market that offers fresh seasonal produce, pumpkins, bushels of apples, freshly baked pies and donuts, candy, preserves and so much more. Demarest Farms also has an ice cream shoppe, Halloween decorations, a corn maze for the kids and face painting by Squiggles the Clown on the weekends.
