Scammer Poses As Tech Support, Moves Proceeds Overseas: Bergen Cops
An out-of-state woman was charged with theft by deception and money laundering in connection with a tech support scam, the prosecutor said.
BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — An out-of-state woman was accused of running a company that posed as tech support and deceived New Jersey victims into paying a fee for staff to "repair" their systems, according to Bergen County authorities.
Mona Sethi, of Pennsylvania, started, and is the registered agent on file for, Micro Technical Services, which would, authorities alleged, trick people into believing their computers had been compromised and, for a fee, "fix" them. Sethi was also accused of moving the criminal proceeds overseas to India.
Additionally, "victims were instructed to provide remote access to their computers, which allowed the perpetrators to commit additional frauds beyond the initial scam," Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
