Suspect Arrested In Edgewater Shooting of Rapper Lil Tjay: Police

Detectives have arrested a suspect in connection with the shooting that happened just after midnight on Wednesday, which left two wounded.

EDGEWATER, NJ — A suspect has been arrested in relation to the shooting of rapper Lil Tjay that occurred just after midnight on Wednesday near 14 The Promenade apartments in Edgewater, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said on Wednesday in a news release.

Mohamed Konate, 27, of New York, New York, was arrested on charges of attempted murder and armed robbery in the shooting of 21-year-old Tione "Lil Tjay" Merritt, who was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds, the prosecutor's office said. As of noon on Thursday, Merritt is listed in critical but stable condition, the office told Patch.

A 22-year old, who was with Merritt, was also shot in the encounter, leaving him hospitalized with a single gunshot wound. Police found the Bronx, New York, man, Antoine Boyd, at the Exxon gas station down the street; he has since been released from the hospital, the prosecutor's office told Patch.

Boyd was found to be in possession of an unlawful weapon, however, as was another Bronx man, 24-year-old Jeffrey Valdez, who was also with Merritt, the prosecutor's office said. Both were arrested on second-degree weapons charges and remanded to Bergen County Jail pending court appearances, the prosecutor's office said.

Konate was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree attempted murder, three counts of first-degree armed robbery, second-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, second-degree unlawful possession of a weapon, second-degree certain persons not to possess a firearm, and fourth-degree aggravated assault. Konate was arrested by detectives from the prosecutor's office and the New York City Police Department, and his extradition to New Jersey is pending, the prosecutor's office said.
