MAHWAH, NJ —At Volvo Car Americas Headquarters in Mahwah on Friday, the Swedish manufacturer's top brass and local elected officials placed silver shovels into the ground to turn over dirt for a new technical training center.

In a ceremonial groundbreaking, CEO of Volvo Car USA Anders Gustafsson announced construction is moving forward on the center, which will be used to teach dealer technicians in the U.S. on electric technologies.

"It is a big investment, but it is really a small investment, because this is something we need to do to deliver success around the company," Gustafsson said at the groundbreaking.

In the years ahead, Gustafsson said, the carmaker will be transitioning toward selling only electric cars by 2030; thus, it will also be opening new 50 electric vehicle chargers to build up the infrastructure.

"We are proud to have Volvo (in Mahwah)," Mayor James Wysocki said at the event. "And we are looking forward to the new technology that (Volvo) is incorporating into our township."

In 2020, Volvo's Americas headquarters moved to Mahwah, and Rep. Josh Gottheimer, who was also at the event, said the new center will continue to spur economic growth and generate new jobs in the area.

"This marks a very, very big win for Northern New Jersey, a win for our economy, for the environment and for our families," Gottheimer said, adding that fighting against climate change and supporting goals of renewable energy are not partisan issues.
