MILLSTONE TOWNSHIP, NJ — Where better to begin your life as a young pup than rural Monmouth County, New Jersey? Perhaps that's why New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. chose a Millstone-based pet resort as the locale where his female Presa Canario (Canary Mastiff) delivered her litter of puppies a few weeks ago.

The luxury pet resort and hotel is Green Leaf Pet Resort, and they have locations in Oakhurst in Ocean Township, and Millstone Twp., tucked away in the far western corner of Monmouth County farm country.

Beckham's dog, Eris, was trained at Green Leaf's Millstone location, the facility told Patch. So when it came time for Eris to deliver her litter of pups this past winter, Beckham decided they would be born there as well, as the facility is equipped to handle dog births. The puppies were born Dec. 4; Eris is two-and-a-half years old.

The pups are all currently up for adoption and Beckham has decided to let Green Leaf handle the adoptions. All the puppies are up to date on their vaccines, microchipped and ready to go.

There are 10 puppies (seven females and three males), and they have names like Venus, Orbit, Solar, Ozone , Comet and Atom. This litter will support a cause very close to Beckham’s heart — the Prisoners Assisting Warrior Services (PAWS) Program, with a portion of the proceeds from every sale going directly to PAWS.

The facility said they only want to see the pups adopted into safe and loving homes.

“My love for dogs is simple: They’re there for your ups and downs, no matter what,” said
Beckham.

The PAWS program was started in July 2017 in Beckham’s hometown of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It’s a program that trains service dogs to assist disabled veterans using volunteer labor from prisoners. That in turn helps rehabilitate the offenders as they prepare themselves to return back to society.

In a year-long training program, volunteers take rescue dogs and train them to be full-time service dogs for veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, military sexual trauma, and traumatic brain injuries related to combat operations.

The dogs are all trained in tasks unique to veterans' needs, such as retrieving medication, opening doors, pushing elevator buttons, finding lost items, recognizing an anxiety attack, waking the handler from a nightmare, comforting the handler during a seizure and guiding the veteran out of a large crowd.

The training is extraordinarily expensive, costing on average $40,000 for a finished dog.

Upon completion of the PAWS Program, the dogs are donated to veterans-in-need from Baton Rouge and surrounding areas, free of charge. To date, PAWS has donated six service-dogs to veterans in that area.
