MANALAPAN, NJ — The Freehold Regional High School District canceled outdoor activities on Thursday because of poor air quality from various wildfires.

The six high schools served by the district - Manalapan, Marlboro, Freehold, Freehold Township, Howell and Colts Neck, are all open but with no outdoor activities, the district said.

"Any after-school activities and events that are indoors in air-conditioned spaces will be on as scheduled. We will continue to monitor this situation throughout the day and alert the community to any further changes if needed," the district said in a notice.

Smoke from wildfires in eastern Canada is lingering above several states on the East Coast this week.

The highest concentrations of wildfire smoke should wane Thursday morning and into the afternoon across New Jersey, the National Weather Service said, though haze and smoke is expected to become more dense into Thursday evening.
