BELMAR - The decades-old Belmar 5-Mile Run has been postponed to August because of the coronavirus outbreak.

"Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and in coordination with government officials, the Belmar Five Mile Run scheduled for July 11 has been postponed," according to a statement on the run's website.

"We are currently working with town officials to receive approval to hold the Belmar Five on August 22. We hope to have a decision by the end of June or early July. The resumption of this event will be made in coordination with government officials."

Registration will remain open until an announcement is made on the future of this year's race. Registration rate increase dates have been adjusted in RunSignUp. Organizers will continue to accept donations until race day.

All current registered entrants will be automatically entered into the August 22 Race. All waivers signed by registered entrants for the July 11 race will be extended to the August 22 race, organizers say.

Additionally, if this year's event is cancelled, entrants will be automatically entered into the July 2021 race and the waiver signed for this year's race will be extended to the 2021 race.

"Given the gravity of the situation, and to support the running community during these challenging times, we will offer a Virtual Run/Walk Option (August 22 - August 30) if the Belmar 5 is cancelled this year," according to a statement on the site. "We will also offer an option to donate your entry fee to the Belmar Goodwill Hose Co. to help support our first responders. If you choose to donate your entry fee you are supporting the vital work of our first responders and you will help us continue to make a difference.

"Finally, we are making an exception to the normal race registration policy by providing entry fee refunds to runners affected by the postponement/cancellation. All of these options will be made available after the future of this year's race is announced."
