Belmar has joined the list of towns throughout New Jersey to begin performing same sex marriages after they became legal on Monday, officials said. Mayor Matt Doherty said one couple has applied for a marriage certificate and he will preside over the ceremony this weekend. "I'm excited to perform the first ceremony this weekend and I look forward to more,'' Doherty said. The couple prefers to keep the ceremony quiet. It will not be held at town hall, Doherty said. So far, Doherty said, there has been only one application for a same-sex marriage certificate since New Jersey became the 14th state to recognize gay marriages on Monday. Gov. Chris Christie formally withdrew his opposition to legalized gay marriage after the state Supreme Court last week refused to block same-sex ceremonies pending Christie's legal challenge.
