The National Weather Service is calling for choppy surf and a moderate risk of rip currents today at Monmouth County beaches.

That means even if you can find a guarded beach, speak to lifeguards about water conditions first. Always swim on a guarded beach and never swim alone or at night. The NWS suggests you bring a flotation device with you in the water.

Waves will be 3 to 4 feet high, with southeasterly swells of 3 feet. The ocean water temperature is 70 degrees.

Skies will be mostly cloudy today, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms. The air temperature will be in the upper 70s. Winds will be from the southwest at 5 to 10 miles per hour.

The ultraviolet index is a 6, which the National Weather Service considers high. There's a moderate risk of lightning, which means thunderstorms are possible.
