Pair From Manasquan Among Citizen's Academy Grads

Two Manasquan residents were among 31 graduates of the Monmouth County Citizen’s Police Academy, official said Friday.

Barbara M. Pfeifer and Herman F. Pfeifer, were among the graduates honored at a ceremony at the Monmouth County Police Academy Wednesday at the completion of the 17th annual academy, according to a release from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office.

The Citizen’s Academy strives to build cooperation and understanding between law enforcement and the residents they serve through classroom discussion, guest speakers, tours of law enforcement facilities and group interaction, the release says.

“This fine group of graduates should be commended for their desire to serve their communities,” Sheriff Shaun Golden said in the release. “I thank each one of them for dedicating their time to learn about the responsibilities of law enforcement and how we work together to keep our communities, county and country safe.”

Those selected for the six week program were presented with an overview of the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office Law Enforcement Division, the 9-1-1 Communications Center, the Office of Emergency Management and the Monmouth County Correctional Institution. The graduates became certified in basic first aid and were provided with presentations on Superstorm Sandy, homeland security and forensic science. One of the highlights of the training was a tour of the Monmouth County Correctional Institution.

In addition, graduates were also presented with the opportunity to volunteer in the sheriff’s office VISCOMP program, (Volunteers In Sheriff’s Community Programs). Citizen’s Police Academy is a pre-requisite to become a VISCOMP volunteer.

“The time dedicated by our VISCOMP volunteers has exceeded 2,900 hours. Those volunteer efforts have enabled us to maintain many community safety programs in Monmouth County,” Golden said in the release. “I thank all of our volunteers and welcome the new ones who have made this commitment.”
